A great success:The 4th Mako Certification Course and the inaugural Nursing Training Program at Parkway Minimally Invasive Intelligent Orthopedic Centre

On May 15–16, 2026, Parkway Shanghai’s Minimally Invasive Intelligent Orthopedic Centre successfully hosted the 4th Mako Certification Course alongside its first-ever Nursing Training Program in Shanghai, centering on the theme “Empowering the Future with Digital Intelligence and Compassionate Care.” The event brought together leading joint surgery experts, senior nursing professionals, and industry peers from across China. Orthopedic surgeons and operating room nursing teams from 11 hospitals in 9 cities participated in the program, engaging in in-depth discussions on the clinical application of the Mako robotic system, standardized nursing coordination, and best practices in evidence-based care. Participants also observed live demonstrations of robot-assisted hip, knee, and unicompartmental arthroplasty, jointly exploring pathways for high-quality development in smart orthopedics.

Background: Digital Intelligence-Driven innovation, strengthening the foundation of smart orthopedics

As digital and intelligent technologies continue to reshape healthcare, orthopedics enters a new era of precision and innovation. Parkway Shanghai Hospital established its Minimally Invasive Intelligent Orthopedic Centre in September 2025, further leveraging the leading joint surgery experts from top-tier hospitals across Shanghai. The Center has built a dual-platform model integrating “clinical application” and “talent development,” steadily advancing the clinical adoption and systematic development of minimally invasive smart orthopedic technologies.

Professor Zhang Xianlong, Head of Joint Surgery at Shanghai Sixth People’s Hospital affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Honorary President of Parkway Shanghai Hospital, and a national pioneer in robot-assisted total hip, total knee, and unicompartmental arthroplasty, highlighted in his remarks that both technological progress and talent development are essential to the future of smart orthopedics. He noted that the center has successfully hosted four consecutive Mako certification programs in previous years, with this year marking the introduction of a dedicated nursing track for the first time.

He emphasized that precision surgery relies on standardized nursing support, and meaningful progress happens through the close collaboration between physicians and nurses — alongside technological innovation and strong teamwork— ultimately achieving continuous innovation and sustainable growth of smart orthopedics.

Standardized nursing: Strengthening systematic protocols to support precision care

Professor Zhuang Min, Chief Nurse at Shanghai Sixth People’s Hospital and Deputy Director of the Nursing Quality Control Center, noted in her remarks that the Mako robotic system offers both precision and safety, effectively supporting faster postoperative recovery for patients.

She emphasized that robot-assisted joint replacement surgery places higher demands on preoperative assessment, intraoperative coordination, and postoperative management. This training program delivered systematic instruction on key areas including robotic system management, surgical pathway planning, sterile protocols, and perioperative nursing coordination. The initiative further strengthens standardized training systems within the field and enhances consistency in clinical nursing practice.

 As the third specialized nursing training program in robotic surgery nationwide and the first of its kind hosted by Parkway Shanghai, signaling a new stage in the standardization of nursing practices for robot-assisted joint replacement in China.

Since the introduction of the Mako robotic system in September 2025, the Minimally Invasive Intelligent Orthopedic Centre at Parkway Shanghai Hospital has safely performed over 100 robot-assisted joint replacement procedures, establishing a mature clinical pathway and comprehensive perioperative management system:

  • Performed a knee replacement for an 84-year-old patient with multiple comorbidities successfully, achieving rapid postoperative recovery.

  • Enabled interprovincial medical insurance settlement, effectively reducing the financial burden on patients.

  • Leveraged a multidisciplinary team approach for elderly and complex cases, ensuring precision and safety in surgical care.

Dr. Wan Lijun, General Manager of Parkway Shanghai Hospital, shared that with the strong support of IHH Healthcare and the expert guidance of Professor Zhang Xianlong, the Minimally Invasive Intelligent Orthopedic Centre has developed a well-established system spanning clinical care, standardized perioperative management, and ongoing talent development. Hands-On learning experience: From theory to practice

This training program adopted an integrated teaching model combining didactic lectures, live surgical demonstrations, hands-on practice using artificial bone models, and clinical case discussions.

Under the technical guidance by Professor Zhang Xianlong, orthopedic specialists and nursing teams worked collaboratively to deliver practical demonstrations and hands-on instruction in Mako robot-assisted knee, unicompartmental knee, and hip arthroplasty. The program focused on key procedural steps—including positioning, bone resection, prosthesis implantation, and team coordination — enabling participants to quickly grasp essential technical skills and develop a deeper understanding of personalized perioperative care strategies.
